THE PRESENTATIONS

Best Practices for a Positive Working Relationship between Architect and Contractor

Verne Morland of ROI Learning Services will explain how establishing a strong basis of partnership among all project stakeholders can enhance the project team’seffectiveness. He will provide examples of partnering successes and pitfalls in major projects, including several in the Detroit area. He will also describe techniques for monitoring the health of a project partnership and taking remedial actions before minor problems lead to serious breakdowns.

The Contractor/Architect Relationship: Case Studies of Successes and Challenges

Four teams of architects/general contractors will introduce their projects as lessons learned in case studies in successful team work. The four projects will be the U of M Athletics South Competition and Performance Project, the State Theater Renovation, the Ford Field Premium Suites Renovation, and the Racquet Club of Ann Arbor Renovation.

Model Replication Activity to Explore the Communication Process in a Team Setting

This activity involves the team replication of a Lego structure that is seen by the architect and described to the contractor, who in turn directs the subcontractor to replicate the Lego, sight unseen. This activity demonstrates the complexity of message clarity, time pressure, assumptions, emotional involvement, and organizational structure. A discussion follows the activity where the observer will comment on the challenges and successes they experienced.
